Iñurrategi, Vallejo and Zabalza return to the Gasherbrum mountains

  • They face a new challenge, trying to link the two summits of GI and GII through the hill that join them. They will go in alpine way, without using the standard paths and without going down to the basecamp.
  • Moreover, this could be the last stage of the WOPeak project.

Bilbao, 30 May 2017.-

The 8th stage of the project points to Gasherbrum I and II mountains in Pakistan. After trying to reach them on 2016 and failing because of the bad weather conditions. The WOPeak team will try it again this year. They face a new challenge, trying to link the two summits of GI and GII through the hill that join them. They will go in alpine way, without using the standard paths and without going down to the basecamp.

” This time our motivation is trying that route in alpine way because we know it will be close to our limits. That introduces an uncertainty that make the expedition pure emotions” declare the climbers.

The challenge have two faces: the alpine one and the social one. On one hand they could finish the eight step of the WOPeak project of The Walk On Project Foundation (WOP) that funds the expedition. The foundation fights against neurodegenerative diseases by funding investigation projects on therapies and creating awareness on these diseases. WOPeak project set the challenge of the project on 2010 saying “We will climb a 8.000 high mountain in eight summits 1.000 meters higher each (the first stage was Gorbeia mountain in Bizkaia in 2010 and this 2017 could the the final stage of this path) “.
